She's Got It!

This is the English language album by French pop star Vanessa Paradis, released in 1992, and produced by Lenny Kravitz, when they were dating. Like Kravitz's earlier work, this album contains 60's and 70's style pop/rock psychedelia that is enhanced by Vanessa's chirpy vocals. Many of the songs are stripped-down, back-to-basics retro cool, and makes the listener feel that he has been transported back to New York City in the 1960s. Best songs include her remake of Lou Reed's "I'm waiting for the man", the ballads "Your Love has got a handle on my mind" and "Sunday mondays", and the Sweet punk/pop of "Be my baby". A classy, well-crafted album that is fun, but not overly commercial. Perfect for those lazy Sunday afternoons when you are sitting on your patio smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee. Sadly, Vanessa has not recorded any English albums since then, because she does have a Sweet distinctive voice which would have sounded good in any language. For the record, she is now married to Johnny Depp and has 2 babies, but in her day, she was what Avril Lavigne would like to be. Cool, sophisticated, and utterly charming. For fans of Lenny Kravitz and Euro-philes who don't mind listening to music that does not prescribe to current trends.

A good pop album by Vanessa Paradis and Lenny Kravitz

Mostly written and produced by Lenny Kravitz. I don't usually like Kravitz's music. It seems he wants to be a very real rock Artist and takes himself too seriously. But for this album he wrote some very light pop tunes and surprisingly they are much better than any of his other songs. Especially "Be My Baby" (which sounds like The Supremes and takes its title from a Ronettes/Phil Spector classic) and "Sunday Mondays" are almost perfect pop songs. There's also a pretty good cover version of "Waiting for the Man" by The Velvet Underground - it seems that Paradis likes Lou Reed's songs because there was "Walk on the Wild Side" on her second album. When I heard Vanessa Paradis's voice for the first time, I thought it was completely unlistenable. But soon I started to like it in some strange way. This is a very good pop album for people who don't take everything too seriously.

Absolutely superb...

...though it does make one wonder why Lenny Kravitz, who penned most of the songs on this album, wasted some of his best material ever on Vanessa Paradis, a singer who had little chance of being heard Outside of her native France.
Vanessa's voice is high-pitched and a bit squeaky, though she was still a wee'un when this album was recorded ten years ago. If she wasn't still a teenager, she was barely into her 20s. If you can Live with that and you like Lenny Kravitz, you'll Love this.
Some of it is oddball 60s novelty, some of it is pure funk, and some of it is late 60s psychedelia, all with a 90s twist. The best tracks on the album by far are Paradis, The Future Song, and Natural High. If those don't hook you...well, you just don't like rock and roll.
