One of the best albums ever!

I guess most (older) metal fans already have this record but for those who don't I suggest you buy it today. Van Halen's two first releases are about as good as hard rock can get. The songs are very well written and well performed, and there are indeed no "fillers" on this one. Edward Van Halen plays amazingly and did have a very big impact on the whole genre, and singer David Lee Roth has a real rock 'n' roll attitude that you can feel without even seeing the guy.
It's interesting to notice that during the guitar solo's there's no rhythm guitar added as it usually is (even for bands with only one guitar player) which in a way gives you a feeling of what The Band sounds like live. Listen to the record in headphones and you hear the unique seperation of instruments.
This debut album and the follow up "Van Halen II" are easily the bands strongest effords and after that I guess the dynamic between Roth and the Van Halen brothers became a source to Conflict instead of creative musical masterpiece. The third release "Women and children first" sure have it's moments but can not compete with the former two. After that Van Halen made a couple of decent, but not excellent, records before the original Band broke up. Roth was replaced by Sammy Hagar and even though Van Halen from time to time managed to write great song the magic was gone, and Van Halen became a metal Band among others.

Truly amazing!!!

The classic debut album by VAN HALEN still sounds fresh today as it did 25 years ago. Having been a fan of The Band for over 20 years, when I hear the classic VH albums, I wish they would make music like this again. This album has classic tunes all over the place. From the opening heavy intro of RUNNIN WITH THE DEVIL, to the wailing guitar intro on JAMIE'S CRYIN, note-for-note, song-for-song, this album stands the test of time. ERUPTION showcases the tremendous guitar playing of Eddie Van Halen, while throughout the album, the rhythm section of Alex Van Halen and Micheal Anthony keeping the music going the way it should. David Lee Roth and his vocals on this album help round out the music. Other songs I recommend that you listen to are : YOU REALLY GOT ME, AINT TALKIN BOUT LOVE, IM THE ONE, FEEL YOUR Love TONIGHT,and LITTLE DREAMER. This album is a must have for any person who considers themselves a hard rock music fan.

An outstanding first effort by the Immortal Van Halen

WOW! Was the first words I said after I first listened to this album (CD) when it first burst into the scene in 1978. The energy this group had was amazing as well as the truely remarkable guitar playing by Eddie Van Halen. His burst of energy displayed on the guitar was fresh and truely ground breaking in 1978 when this was first released and was very refreshing to listen to due to the disco craze that was going on at the time.
Along with the amazing vocals of lead singer David Lee Roth, the excellent bass playing of Michael Anthony and the gifted drum playing of Alex Van Halen, well you have a group that truely became legends of Rock and Roll and with this, their first album, it is easy to see why.
From the opening song "Running With The Devil" that begins with sirens blazing, to their outstanding rendition of The Kinks hit, "You Really Got Me" and the hillarious "Ice Cream Man" every song on this CD is remarkable and it was a rare occasion that this much energy and talent was made apparent by a first album (CD). This album truely marked the beginning of great things that were going to happen to Van Halen.
I can't recommend this highly enough. It has everything for the fans of Rock and Roll such as high energy, outstanding musicianship from each member, and you can tell that these guys had a great time in the studio. Kudo's go to KISS's Gene Simmons for discovering this band, and now over 20 years later, fans of Van Halen still eagerly await for each new effort they release and still enjoy their prior albums (CD) again and again.
