| Van Halen - 1984 Band: Van Halen Tracks: - 1984 - Jump - Panama - Top Jimmy - Drop Dead Legs - Hot for Teacher - I'll Wait - Girl Gone Bad - House of Pain A Lost Time 1984, Van Halen's last album with the original lineup, went over big. 1984/Jump was a rock landmark. The keyboard work is great, Van Halen was no stranger to them. "Panama" ranks as one of the great rock songs of all time, not just for Van Halen. The slowdown near the end almost takes you there as you "ease the seat back". "Top Jimmy" is somewhat like a "Johnny Be Goode" song (Top Jimmy, he's the king). "Hot for Teacher" and "I'll Wait" received lots of airplay and "Girl Gone Bad" features some wild guitar and drum playing, especially near the end. It's been too long now to expect this Band to sound like they did then even if they do get back together, which is doubtful after so many years. Van Halen I and II almost seem like a phase now. The energy and pace this Band had may never be matched again by any other set of musicians. VAN HALEN JUMPS ON TOP OF THE WORLD! Their best album! Edward, Alex, Michael and Dave hit superstardom with this excellent album! The first time I heard Jump, in 1983 - at the age of 12, I was completely stunned at how well Van Halen sounded with Edward's featured synthesizer playing! It began showing in Women And Children First, in '80, but really drove full throttle, in '83, when The Band recorded 1984! The album's intro piece, 1984, is a synth-instrumental by Edward, played in a slow tempo and revealed notes of the album's next track....the monster hit, Jump! The charts shattered when the single Jump was released....it propelled The Band to superstar status, unlike anything they had ever seen before! The music world had now witnessed Van Halen reaching for worldwide acclaim! Panama, one of my favorites, followed and kept the VH bus in overdrive....they continued on with Hot For Teacher(made themselves look silly in the music video) and the totally awesome synth driven rocker - I'll Wait! The whole album is great and is without "filler"! It was Dave's last record with the band, but the energy throughout the 1984 album left no one with impressions that he was jumping ship....ironically, his lackluster solo career drove him into mediocrity - almost becoming a lounge act. I would definitely recommend 1984 to rock music lovers....I cherish having this remarkable album in my CD collection! A Lost Time 1984, the last album by the original Van Halen lineup, went over big. The song 1984/Jump was a landmark in rock history. This was some great keyboards, Van Halen wasn't a stranger to them. "Panama" was next. The slowdown near the end should go on longer as you "ease the seat back". "Top Jimmy" is a straight forward, at The Hop kind of Van Halen's version of "Johnny Be Goode". I haven't poured over the rest much. "Hot for Teacher" and "I'll Wait" were popular. It was on the pop rock/hard rock border of an album. These "monsters" of rock were getting more polished, it seems to always happen. Van Halen I and II seemed like a phase they were going through now. But 1984 left a lot to the imagination of what they would sound like now if they'd stayed together. They surely would have done somewhere around 10 more albums by now. But sometimes even the Love of rock doesn't keep a Band together. This group kept a pace going like no other set of musicians may ever equal.
