good index for a new fan ...

Being a fan for 3 years I already had all the albums, so I basically bought the 2 cd set for the B-Sides and the new mix of "Sweetest Thing". The Collection on this "best of" album are everything a new fan could look for. It has probably all the songs that people know of by U2, but don't know U2 does them. Such songs as "pride" and "with or without you". But this is the best collection of "hits" I've ever heard. Now what am I saying ? I'm saying they should've called this 'the Hits 1980-1990'. I'm sure any long time U2 fan will be mad at the absences of songs like '40', 'A sort of Homecoming','running to stand still', and 'god part 2'. This is basically a collection of their radio hits from the 80's which is fine. In return you get a new version of an old song, 'Sweetest Thing'. This is a great Summer song. Probably one of the most popular songs by U2 in a long time since Zooropa. One last thing, where's 'bullet the blue sky' on this ? It just happens to be one of their greatest political anthems and it's not on here...Ah well. Listen and Enjoy ~

Good for the passing fan

This record has the essentials for the non-hardcore fan of U2 in the 1980s. The only singles that are Truly missed are "Gloria" from 'October', "Two Hearts Beat As One" from 'War', and "In God's Country" from 'The Joshua Tree'; but for the sake of fitting everything on one CD, the choices of tunes in this collection are well-calculated. Also, a fan merely looking for a best of collection will probably not be phased by the fact that some of the songs appear here in an edited version ("New Years' Day" and "Where the Streets Have No Name") or that a superior Live version of a track has been overlooked (compare the version of "Bad" on here with the version on 'Wide Awake in America').
For those who want to expand their 80s-era U2 collections beyond the "Best of", I recommend (in order of quality): (1) 'The Joshua Tree'; (2) 'War'; (3) 'Rattle & Hum'; and (4) 'The Unforgettable Fire'.

skip this - the albums are worth getting so get 'em!

Although all these songs are great, I give this collection 4 stars because they are much more at home in their original album settings. U2 is a Band that has made phenomenal, cohesive albums in which 99% of the tunes are worthwhile (save the weak ATYCLB). So this collection isn't necessary unless you're the type that ONLY appreciates top 40 singles.
How I would rate their albums:
BOY . . . . . . . . . . . . . ****
OCTOBER . . . . . . . . . . . *****
WAR . . . . . . . . . . . . . *****
UNDER A BLOOD RED SKY . . . . *****
THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE . . . *****
THE JOSHUA TREE . . . . . . . *****
RATTLE AND HUM . . . . . . . ****
ACHTUNG BABY . . . . . . . . *****
ZOOROPA . . . . . . . . . . . ****
POP . . . . . . . . . . . . . ****
ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE . . **
The B-side disk occasionally available with this singles collection contains some of their best music ever, especially "Walk To The Water" and "Luminous Times (Hold Onto Love)." I have most of these B-sides on vinyl and I can tell you they should have included the "Deep In The Heart" B-side, another great one. So skip the singles collection unless you need the B-sides!
