| U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind Band: U2 U2 delivers the goods..of course For years, U2 has supplied their fans with protest power anthems, experimental rock, and a neverending ability to go on the road with extravagant tours; followed by die hard fans, and hopefully with their latest, attract some new fans. U2 is one of My Favorite bands of all time, and I must say I couldnt have been happier with All That You Cant Leave Behind. It sounds like War, or The Joshua Tree; it sounds like heaven. Getting back to their Roots after 1997's POP (which I thought was a great album), U2 embarks on a soul searching Journey and this time they dont leave their signature sound behind. "Beautiful Day", the first single, is excellent. The Grammy winning tune is the best U2 song youve heard in years, with a place in top 40 radio amongst Britney Spears and Destiny's Child. The album seems to have a "baggage" theme, with songs about moving on as on "Walk On", and "In A Little While" in which Bono sings "In a little while, this hurt will hurt no more.." The album updates the band's superb songwriting craft("Walk On") as well as not so quiet tunes ("Elevation"). "Wild Honey" is another standout, making one wonder if the new kids of rock are taking notes. U2 could definitely teach them a thing or two. While some may groan and complain that the new stuff doesnt hold a candle to such classics as "New Year's Day", "I Still Havent Found What Im Looking For", and "One"; be reminded that U2 has kept their catalog in good shape and havent tried to drastically Change their sound. Theyve played by their own rules, and I think they are better than ever. Good, but not great. After reading a number of superlative reviews for U2's new album 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' I rushed out and picked up a copy, in truth, U2's latest effort is a fine collection of songs but not the groundbreaking record some critics would have you believe. The album starts off well with 'Beautiful Day' and 'Stuck In A Moment..' which gets better with each spin. 'Elevation', however, does nothing for me and is the least impressive song here - a bit of a throwaway rocker/dance track with Bono trying to sound too down and dirty like he's Ireland's equivalent of Sly Stone. U2 have always sounded better when they stick to their trademark earnest rock as in 'Walk On' or the one Truly great track 'Kite' which would have fit snugly between 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses' and 'So Cruel' on Achtung Baby. With said album in mind, 'In A Little While' sounds like 'So Cruel' inverted into a hopeful Love song while 'Peace On Earth' and 'When I Look At The World' are both pleasing social commentaries on the world at large without being too preachy or dictatorial. Overall, a solid, wink-free collection from U2. Seriously Overrated. This CD could be summed up by the word MEDIOCRE. It has none of the transcendent, spiritual fire that made earlier U2 so great. Bono's voice is fading, but that's nothing compared to the sheer musical monotony of each track on this CD. The music sounds emotionally dead. "Beautiful Day" is an okay track, but I find that I'm sick of it after hearing it for a few months. When I compare it to songs like "With or Without You," "New Year's Day," "Pride," "One"...(insert any old U2 classic) there simply IS no comparison. Those songs never get old. I almost can't listen to one song on this CD all the way through, because I just get so bored. It's too bad, because in my opinion U2 used to be a Truly great group of artists. Now they've just run out of ideas. There are a few redeeming qualities--The lyrics are good, even if they are set in a background of boring harmonies. "Elevation" is a pretty rockin track if you don't over-listen to it. Compared to most of the mainstream musical waste that circulates the charts nowadays, U2's album stands out. But the fact that this album could have been so highly praised just confirms the total degeneration of modern pop and rock music.
