A masterful stroke by a much misunderstood Band

I played this album at my son's birth. Spirit of Eden is one of the most important albums I will ever own. Just listen to the regal woodwind, the majestic soundscapes created by some of the greatest musicians. They are not a Commercial band. They believe in Purity, in never going with second best and standing for what you believe in. "LET THE MUSIC SPEAK", said the press release back on September 16th 1988. I would Love it if people had the courage to! This album is not for the Faint of heart, it rips through you when it needs to. But by "Inheritance" we see a gentle almost reverend solution to our problem..... Accept what you hear, without prejudice or favor. I will always Love this album for just having the guts to be born.

I can't believe it

A few years ago a co-worker and I were talking about music and he said "Talk Talk have an album called 'Spirit Of Eden', you should pick it up. You'll Love it." TALK TALK! That British 80's pop band? "All you ever do is talk, talk"? Insanity! I didn't take his advice seriously for even one second. Luckily for me, he later brought the CD to work.
I'm at a loss for words to Express the beauty of this music. Now I feel foolish for trying to write about it. When all else fails, make a comparison: I guess all I can say is that this somehow makes me feel similar to the way I do when I listen to Slint's "Spiderland" album or Two Dollar Guitar's "Train Songs".
I still can't believe this is the same Talk Talk.

Commercial Suicide, according to their label!

This is one of the mellowest albums you'll find anywhere. I do Love it when bands deliberately make their music more and more obscure. Originally cast in the New Romantic mould, Talk Talk became increasingly uncomfortable with the expectations of their pop Audience and the ridiculous clothes they were expected to wear.
By 1988, leader Mark Hollis had quit heroin, and The Band turned up in a disused Church with a large budget and a bizarre collection of musicians -- including violin virtuouso Nigel Kennedy -- to record this gem. More Van Der Graaf than Roxy Music, it impressed the music press, but not their label, EMI. Talk Talk were dropped by EMI the following year, because of the irreconcilable rift caused by this album.
Compared to its predecessor 'The Colour of Spring', this is their equivalent of Radiohead's 'Kid A', though 12 years earlier.
Everyone ought to have this album. As one review said, "melodies flow across soundscapes created by the oddest array of instruments seen this side of Tom Waits".
