My first initiation to Taj was through his early standard acoustic blues covers and originals, then I followed along as he tried his hand at blues-infused African rhythms, Reggae, Pop, Soul and duets with diverse musicians such as Toumani Diabate and Ry Cooder. This time around Taj combines blues with Hawaiian music and the results are stunning. From the great Hawaiian blues rendition of Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', to the hauntingly beautiful Taj Mahal original 'Moonlig remony of words, the opening even features Morrison screaming for us to "wake up!" "Ghost Song" follows as a rhythmic tribal invocation with some of the most evocative poetry found in the album. There is a moment of wonderful insight where Morrison in an interview mentions the incident where he and his family encountered a crash in the New Mexico desert where indians were the victims and he Felt the presence of their spirits jump into him. This of course adds to the shamanistic aura of the Morrison myth (a presence modern performers such as Godsmack's Sully Erna and Soundgarden's ic listening experience. There's a number of standout tracks - Three King Fishers because of the fantastic guitar/harpsichord jam at the end, The Fat Angel (ostensibly about Mama Cass) and The Ferris Wheel are wonderful, but The Trip (the original flip side to the title track on 45) is a [great] song that sounds as good today as it did back then water all the time, you quench my Heart and you quench my mind, a couple of months ago, I got it from a local store.
