| Jean-Michel Jarre - Zoolook Band: Jean-Michel Jarre Tracks: - Ethnicolor - Diva - Zoolookologie (Remix) - Woolloomooloo - Zoolook (Remix) - Blah Blah Cafe - Ethnicolor II Peak Stunning, very much of-its-time but Outside of time, 'Zoolook' is probably Jean Michel Jarre's most complex and substantial album. A complete break from his earlier work (there is 'singing', the tracks have names, there are non-electronic instruments), it was a commercial failure at the time, and has come to be regarded as a fascinating failure, and Jarre moved to a more obviously populist direction with subsequent releases. Starting off with the epic 'Ethnicolor', this is beyond categorisation. Utilising a wide range of ethnic vocal samples, processed and edited with the then-novel and hugely expensive Fairlight CMI 2 sampler, 'Ethnicolor' is a strange, alien soundscape that eddies and swirls around into an orchestral climax, before fading out. 'Diva' is similar, and lighter, with Laurie Anderson mouting wordless vocals, and steel drums. 'Wooloomooloo' is a grinding illbient track, with Steam engines crashing left and right, 'Zoolookologie' is a surrealist dance track with a melody played with a 'doo'. The title track is similar - but with funk bass guitar. On most versions of the album the last two tracks are remixed - 'Zoolook' is virtually identical in both versions, and the remix of 'Zoolookologie' is actually better than the original. 'Blah Blah Cafe' is similar to 'Zoolook' but ran through a blender. The last track, 'Ethnicolor 2', has nothing to do with the first track, and is my personal favourite - mixing the sounds of a busy railway concorse in some far-off country, a clicking rhythm in a strange time signature, and some droning cellos, it's an evocative ambient piece. All in all this is less immediately grabbale than, say, 'Oxygene', but you'll probably listen to it for longer. A stunning creation, a paradigm shift for electronica There are some Truly groundbreaking Electronic albums out there and Zoolook is one of them.
