Under rated Iggy

The best of his Arista LPs "Party" may seem like watered down Iggy on the Surface (ie "accessible" melodies; that lame cover "sea of love") but check out the lyrics: "Sooner or later, baby, I'm gonna bruse you just like a tomato", "When I walked into the rock n roll club I found myself with the usual bums", "who left that [...] door half open!" Despite the "listenible" almost mainstream music this was Iggy's most bitter album until "Beat Em Up".

Wonderfully Tacky and Fun

I thought it would have been obvious from the cheesy cover art, but this is Iggy Pop's Vision of those crappy "Summer Hits" compilation albums you usually see advertised on late night television and meant to "liven up your party".
That is why there is such a variety of styles on it, from "Sea Of Love" (just made for slow dancing) to the somewhat demented tear-jerker "Pumping For Jill". I gather "Happy Man" is a sort of novelty song. Most of the songs are somewhat mindless party music (hence the title) They're happy, harmless, tacky pop songs like you would find on any respectable top 40 playlist of the 80s
I agree that this is not one of Iggy Pop's most characteristic or better albums, but it's an interesting bit of playacting, with Iggy trying different roles and modes. I probably wouldn't take this on a desert island with me, but it's certainly a lot of fun.

"Party" is definately not his best work

To be brief, I am a fan of Iggy Pop, but this cd just didn't cut it for me... somehow it lacks the vision, attitude, and artistry of albums such as Soldier and New Values, or Zombie Birdhouse. I just thought I should put my 2 cents in. I listen to those albums constantly. This one I sold back to my local used cd shop.
