The Wonderful Drugged Maze of Sludge

It's no surprise that Iggy would eventually turn into Bowie. With the Idiot, he moved to Berlin and hooked up with the man. The backing Band here is the same one that Bowie used for Low, and Bowie actually wrote the music for this. Naturally Iggy provided the wonderful lyrics, "Last night I was down in the lab/ With Dracula and his crew."
This album is really too wonderful to put into words. It's dark, scary, depressing, and confusing. I especially Love the muddy sound. You know, Joy Division's Ian Curtis hung himself while listening to this.
Iggy's scream is gone (with the exception of the end of "China Girl") and replaced by this new baritone crooner (David Bowie's ... son). Stand out tracks include the quite unfun "Funtime", the frightening drugged up "Nightclubbing" and of course "China Girl". This really is fabulous and unique. If you enjoy Heroes and Low by Bowie, as well as Fun House by The Stooges get this and thank me later.

Iggy and Bowie, better together than alone

The best album ever by both Iggy Pop and David Bowie. But the theme of the album is suggested by its title -- self-hate. In China Girl Iggy expresses his Love by telling her to stay away from him, and there's no moment in rock and rock quite like her paradoxically tender response -- "Oh, Jimmy, just you shut your mouth / She says shhhhh." The last three songs (side B of the record) get very deep into druggy despair. Lust for Life, the other Bowie/Pop album, is a sequel in more ways than one. The Idiot is about the descent, Lust for Life the recovery.

A new Iggy Pop emerges

The Idiot, the solo debut of Iggy Pop presents a very different version of Pop. Out of rehab for an addiction to heroine, Pop was removed from the mischievous, snarling backdrop of his hometown of Detroit and the fast, loud, vicious, buzzsawing sound of his old band, The Stooges and placed in the dark and tragic world of Berlin, before The Fall of Communism, with production from the clean, studio wizardry of the darkly-laced, androgynous, rock star extraordinaire, David Bowie, the Idiot produced a darker, more vampiric Iggy Pop. Like Bowie, Pop, from the start of his career to today, is primarily known for his personas, more than his instrumental or lyrical skills and this album is a drastic Change in musical character for man who started his career, screaming, yelling and rolling around in raw meat and broken glass all in the name of rock and roll. Songs such as the politically devious China Girl; the Oedipal Sister Midnight and Nightclubbing, a party song with an ambiguously murk, show Iggy Pop as a character shrouded in darkness amidst a clean, Electronic wash of sound, resembling Bowie's last album, Station to Station. While it's not as well-executed and as seemingly natural as most of Bowie's changes in musical character, the Idiot is a value second insight to the rock star know as Iggy Pop.
