A review of the brilliant Dookie (Green Day) by Daniel Bland

The album starts with the wonderful 'Burnout', which has a certain energy about it which makes you want to play it over and over again. 'Having a blast', has an addictive drum beat, and Billie Joe's punky voice adds that special touch. Billie Joe's lyrics are very modest in the 3rd song, 'chump', and towards the end there is a wonderful piece of music, without singing, which I love. 'Longview' has a lovely variety, with the majority of it being slow, and a great heavier chorus. 'Welcome to paradise's'brilliant chord structure possibly makes it the best track on the album. 'Pulling teeth', a slower song, but still, a superb song. Then, 'Basket case' and 'She', two similar songs - slow, fast, slow, fast. Theses songs will leave you speechless, at least until you come to 'Sassafras Roots'. Although, slightly repetitive, the parts which are repeated are excellent. On to 'When I come aroun', maybe their most famous song, maybe my favourite. Again, a slower song, ! but still, it will stick in your mind. Number 11, 'Coming clean'. A song which I found rather boring. After listening to the album a couple of times, you will skip this song and Move straight on to 'Emenius sleepus'. Billie Joe, again his voice is brilliant, he's feeling sick and he wants to go home. But he'll have to wait, 2 songs left. 'In the end'. Another great song, with a supreme drum beat near the end. The last song, 'F.O.D.' The first 1 and a half minutes are very slow, and light, and then, an explosion. The music errupts. Something which has to be played at full volume. A bonus track, at the end of 'F.O.D' is 'All by myself'. Funny 6the first time, but something which is not worth waitng for. All in all a great album, and something which should not be missed

Green Day Makes Your Day A Little Greener.

Green Day, one of the greatest bands around and Dookie, by far their best album ever, which is saying a lot. Green Day is a cross between light Fluffy bubble-gummy rock and hard forceful rock, with very clever lyrics and a great drummer. Here is a review of all the songs on this CD.
1. Burnout - (8/10) This is a good song, but it's nothing special. Good guitar and I like the drums.
2. Having A Blast - (7.5/10) This is also a good song, it's more angry than most of their songs, and there is no real catchy chorus or great guitar part, so it's only okay.
3. Chump - (8/10) The guitar is catchy and stands out right away. It's a pleasant song but I really don't like the instrumental part at the end. They need a better way to end the song.
4. Longview - (8.5/10) This song really was speaking the truth about boring life. Great song but not super. It's a song that really spells Green Day once you hear it. It defines them as a band.
5. Welcome to Paradise - (8.8/10) This one is better than Longview, but doesn't deserve a 9. It has a catchy chorus and guitar part the tune is kind of annoying and so is the whole song.
6. Pulling Teeth - (9/10) This is my second favorite song on the whole album. Great guitar, vocal, bass, and drums. Pretty much the whole song is great, but it could be longer. Also very pleasant to listen to.
7. Basket Case - (8.9/10) I Love this song. The first time I got the CD and heard this song I played maybe 12 times in a row and I would have listened longer but I had to be somewhere. Very catchy and very true.
8. She - (9.5/10) This song is so awesome. The best on the CD and the best Green Day has ever written. Great vocals guitar and bass. I don't know why but I just Love this song.
9. Sassafras Roots - (8/10) I hope I spelled that right. Anyway, this song has good vocals, but there's just a little something that sounds strange. It's still a good song but could be better.
10. When I Come Around - (8.8/10) It seems they stuck all their great songs in the back. This song is so great once I heard it I was singing it my head everywhere for 2 weeks. It was so good I didn't even want it to get unstuck from my mind.
11. Coming Clean - (6/10) I'm not really a big fan of this song. It's not 'bad', but I wouldn't go so far as to say 'good.' But compared to the great songs on this CD, I guess I had to give it this rating.
12. Eminus Sleepus - (7.5/10) Good guitar and lyrics, but lacks meaning and could be longer. It's a good song, one of my favorits, but there are definitly better on the CD.
13. In The End - (7/10) So now I know where Linkin Park got it from. It starts Strong right away but the tune of the lyrics kinda ... But it's definitly not bad.
14. F.O.D. - (8/10) It deserves

People Don't Give These Guys Enough Credit...

Yes, they've sold millions of records, but so what? Green Day is still a great band, and Dookie is a great album. Green Day took the inane lyrics of the Ramones, and the pop-punk sounds of the Buzzcocks and Descendents and created a fun, loud, punk album with a sound of the band's own. "Burnout," "Chump," and "She" are all great, fast, three-chord punk tunes. Unlike the slew of cookie-cutter punk bands with tired riffs and incredibly stupid lyrics, Green Day can be fun without annoying immaturity and can write more "mature" songs without sounding forced. "Welcome To Paradise" captures the pain of leaving home and setting out on your own in a rough town. "Emenius Sleepus" talks about growing up and thus growing apart from a longtime friend, something that lots of people (including me) can relate to. "Pulling Teeth" deals with an abusive girlfriend while the hit "Basket Case" is an anthem for when you think you're losing your mind. With "When I Come Around," Green Day showed that they were capable of writing a great pop tune. I listen to The Clash, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Descendents, Bad Brains, Buzzcocks, Pixies, Husker Du, etc., and I still like Dookie. It's not the greatest punk record, and Green Day is not the greatest punk band. But Dookie is a great album, and that's all that matters.
