| Gathering - Souvenirs Classification: Pop Band: Gathering Tracks: - These Good People - Even The Spirits Are Afraid - Broken Glass - You Learn About It - Souvenirs - We Just Stopped Breathing - Monsters - Golden Grounds - Jelena - A Life All Mine Sounds like progress Souvenirs demonstrates The Gathering's continued progression away from metal and more toward the experimental and atmospheric. It seems like with every album, there is less reliance on Double bass and crunchy riffs and more on texture and ambience. The result is beautiful here: every song has a distinct feel to it, and the entire disc has a subtle, hypnotic quality to it. It seems like there is an emphasis on the negative spaces within each song; there are Lush and myriad sounds in between the stanzas of the songs that seem to function as lyrics themselves. We are lulled with a trumpet in "We Just Stopped Breathing," while other songs use echoes and such to great effect. The vocals are the dominant element responsible for the mood of the disc, and range from soothing to melancholy. The title track starts with a slightly sober voice, then shifts into a soft and higher-pitched chorus. "You Learn About It" is probably the best song on the album and has a Forlorn and longing quality to it that is the result of some gorgeous singing. I'm a huge fan of more lofty-sounding albums like Nighttime Birds and How to Measure a Planet, but this disc has not disappointed at all. Souvenirs is a fantastic recording, and one that I can't see myself getting tired of. Probably their best yet The Gathering is just the type of Band that has never disappointed me. Ever since Anneke joined the band, each of their releases have just gotten better and better. And with Souviners the trend contiunues. Souviners continues in the direction The Band started with "How to Measure a Planet", longer, sprawling, atmospheric, dark "rock" songs that grip at your emotions. Anneke has never sounded more beautiful, and the rest of The Band has written some of their most inspired music to date. Broken Glass, You Learn About It, and A Life All Mine (feating Ulver and former Arcturus frontman Trickster G) are just simply amazing songs. If you're looking for something that sounds like Mandylion, look toward Lacuna Coil. If you're looking for something that pushes boundaries and is original, You'll Love Souviners. A triumph! Souvenirs, Dutch metal outfit The Gathering's latest album, marks their final shift out of metal and into a new, undefinable sound composed of heavy lyrics, dark melodies, a melancholic tempo and the ethereal vocals of Anneke van Giersbergen. Listening to The Samples on this site one can easily hear the uniqueness of her voice and the Extreme range it conquers throughout the album. Clearly dripping with emotion, each note of each instrument twisted with Anneke's vocals convey the deep feelings and powerful composition behind each song. Not only that but they are all quite catchy too ;) Six stars if I could. Buy Gathering Souvenirs at Amazon.com Buy posters at Allposters.comJamster - the latest ringtones for your phone! |
