| Garbage - Beautifulgarbage Band: Garbage Tracks: - Shut Your Mouth - Androgyny - Can't Cry - Til The Day I Die - Cup Of Coffee - Silence Is Golden - Cherry Lips - Breaking Up The Girl - Drive You Home - Parade - Nobody Loves You - Untouchable - So Like A Rose Beautiful, indeed :) Ahhh, another great bunch of songs from Shirley and the gang.
Garbage have, with this album, left behind their grunge Roots and moved on to pure pop - albeit, Garbage-tinged pop.
Can't Cry These Tears is a saccharine throwback to old girl groups, and shows how far The Band have come since their eponymous debut. It's hard to imagine 'Stupid Girl' resting confortably next to 'Can't Cry These Tears' on the same CD, but on beautifulgarbage it not only fits, but helps set the mood for songs that worry more about good songwriting than neat ssound effects.
The group has a classy pedigree, and here you can finally hear elements of that which have been lacking in beautifulgarbage's more one-dimensional predecessors. [I of course Love those records too, but this record feels fresh; those seem kind of dated now]
Bottom Line: Buy this record. If you're a Garbage fan already, there will be more than enough of Shirley Manson's voice and memorable soundscapes to hook you back into Garbage-obsession, and if you've never liked them before, give this record a try . . . it may surprise you :) People, people, PEOPLE!! Why do people HATE for their favorites to grow or experiment? Dave Matthews was recently the victim of virulent commentary when he DARED try something different and now Garbage is getting hit with criticism for not making the same album for the third time. The comparisons to Britney Spears are hysterical and shows a distinct lack of musical knowledge. Hey, you don't have to like it, but please--not even close! This album is full of should've been hits, especially "Cherry Lips" and "Shut Your Mouth" (though the latter would have had to have been edited for radio). Shirley sounds amazing and the production is immaculate (the "overproduced" criticism is ridiculous considering the incredibly produced "Version 2.0"). There are only two tracks on the disc that I would Call subpar: the first single, "Androgyny", which isn't horrible, but just not up to the level of excellence of the rest of the album and "Can't Cry These Tears", a fifties/sixties style ballad that is not too hot. Unfortunately, those two tracks are number's 2 and 3, but give the rest of the album a chance. You won't be disappointed unless your a snob who thinks that you have to be a non-seller and a social outcast to actually be good. Such a joke. Beautiful and Eclectic garbage New, sexy, experimental...all the above describe beautifulgarbage. The sampled rock elements that became more prevalent in Version 2.0 are still there, but they have evolved into a different monster. Here they are far more eclectic, bridging what seems like every era of modern music. From the dreamy 60's high school dance theme-like swing of "Can't Cry These Tears" to the 'Dust in the Wind' acoustic elements that are the intro to "Drive You Home" to the bouncy 80's-ish feel of "Cherry Lips" (think Hey Mickey or 99 Luftballoons) to the 'alternative' ballads that we've come to expect from them, as in "So Like A Rose", "Breaking Up the Girl" & "Cup of Coffee". The album has the transgenre pop appeal of "Androgyny", but it true strengths are the experimental ones. "Shut Your Mouth" has an industrial twinge to go along with its pop, and could have been in most scenes of "Strange Days" - very deconstructionist post gen-ex. "Til the Day I Die" takes what could be a teenage girl's declaration of devotion and throws in some alien-like Samples and a Church choirish backdrop to the chorus. "Silence is Golden" (an Ironic title, it is the noisiest song on the album) and "Parade" put up and bring down the walls of sound, a la "Supervixen" before them. "Untouchable" is hip-hop retroish, almost Kraftwerk-like in parts..alternating robot/pretty girl voice and a wah-wah, surreptitious guitar in the chorus. The true gem is "Nobody Loves You" with its brooding, twangy guitar intro, followed by almost spooky synth/drum machine verse, it is Chamber music for the dissolved girl-princess, with a perfect, uncoiling outtro guitar. All said, it might be their most ambitious release to date. A definite must-have.
