| Fleetwood Mac - Say You Will Classification: Pop Band: Fleetwood Mac Tracks: - What's The World Coming To - Murrow Turning Over In His Grave - Illume (9/11) - Thrown Down - Miranda - Red Rover - Say You Will - Peacekeeper - Come - Smile At You - Running Through The Garden - Silver Girl - Steal Your Heart Away - Bleed To Love Her - Everybody Finds Out - Destiny Rules - Say Goodbye - Goodbye Baby SAY WHAT YOU WILL, THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING!! Too many people have misjudged this record by summing up their evaluations after a preliminary listen. With a jaw-dropping 18 song track list, this album needs to be played a few times before one can appreciate its brilliance. I, too was lukewarm when I first heard the album. Having had it for over a month, I can honestly say that it is one of the best Fleetwood Mac albums ever, second only to Rumours. I find myself wanting to listen to it every day, it's that good. Every song is a standout as if the album was a collection of greatest hits. Equally amazing is the excellent musicianship is in The Band after all these years. Both Stevie and Lindsey are in fine form, vocally and musically and have written some of their best material ever. This is Fleetwood Mac's Supernatural and should go on to multi-platinum success. I'm willing to bet that this album will win big at next year's Grammy and American Music Awards. With so many great songs, it's hard to pick favorites. However, Peacemaker, Say You Will, Murrow Turning in his Grave, Say Goodbye, Thrown Down, Flowers in the Garden come to mind. Peacemaker benefits from Stevie's gorgeous background alongside Lindsey's. A beautiful melody, it should be higher in the charts. An appropriate choice as the lead-off single given the tie-in to modern times and also because it's catchy and positively proclaims the Mac is back. The title track promises to be a big hit, especially in the crossover and country charts. This is the song that will draw audiences to Fleetwood Mac. Of the two albums I was looking forward to, the other being Madonna's, I can honestly state that this is the better record. The harmonies and slick production are perfectly in sync with the mood and tempo of the songs. This album proves that FM is not content to Ride on the coattails of their past glory. Though some songs have a characteristic FM sound, many others explore new areas, partcularly Lindey's Murrow and Come. I own both the Special Edition and the DVD-Audio. The DVD-Audio is worth getting for improved clarity of the stereo mix but I found the 5.1 Dolby Digital performance to be lacking. The mix is bright and lacking in bass. I don't have a DVD-Audio Player so I can't comment on the DVD Audio performance. The other misgiving I have is with the menus on the DVD Audio disc which don't allow you to pause or fast forward. However, the stereo performance more than makes up for the deficiencies. All in all, an awesome album and highly recommended in any format. I'll conclude with a listing of my top 5 FM albums:: 1 Rumours
Say You Will
Tango in the Night
Tusk
Fleetwood Mac THE greatest Fleetwood Mac album...ever Say You Will is an awesome CD. It's also a tribute to Stevie and Lindsey's incredible talents and abilities as singers, songwriters and musicians. Say You Will is a tribute to coming full circle. FM's popularity shot through the roof when Stevie and Lindsey joined The Band and now Say You Will is a return to those days. This album is awesome for Stevie's songwriting and singing talent and for Lindsey's incredibly inventive and experimental musical approach. Combined, Stevie and Lindsey's talents result in 18 expertly crafted songs. I think Say You Will is the best FM album for many reasons. This album is a testiment to the fact that Stevie and Lindsey haven't gotten stuck in the past. They have evolved gracefully and they have changed. Say You Will IS NOT Rumours and I say thank God for that. Rumours was great, but that was 25 years ago. ... Say You Will surprises me in it's richness and it's depth. It surprises and pleases me with its anti-war statements and social commentary. It surprises me with the clarity of Stevie's voice. It surprises me by proving once again that Lindsey really does know how to produce Stevie's songs. All of Stevie's songs are excellent. I'm sitting here trying to decide how I would rank her songs on this CD and the honest answer is that they are all great. "Everybody Finds Out" is noteworthy for its emotion and anger and for its instrumental arrangement which shows a sophistication not usually found in FM songs. "Goodbye Baby" is all about Stevie's incredible voice, as is "Silver Girl". "Destiny Rules", "Thrown Down" and "Say You Will" all have infectuous melodies and lyrics. "Running Through the Garden" is a great rock song. "Smile at You" is a song known to many Stevie fans because it's been circulating as a bootleg. It is so good to hear a production version of the song that is all polished. And "Illume"...what can I say. This is a beautifully crafted song about the raw emotion of being trapped in NYC during the events of 9-11. Stevie is a talented storyteller! Lindsey opens Say You Will with "What's the World Coming To?". From the first few drum beats, I could tell the Mac was back. The social commentary of this song along with "Ed Murrow Turning Over In His Grave" and "Peacekeeper" are Truly timely with the war in Iraq and the news coverage of the war. "Miranda" and "Come" are great examples of Lindsey's talent. I have to admit I'm not sure what "Red Rover" is all about but I'll assume it is political with it's references to red, White and blue. "Steal Your Heart Away" and "Bleed to Love Her" are both wonderful Love songs. The bonus Live tracks are great for the simple fact that as much as I like Lindsey's production of this album, I happen to believe that the sign of a great group is Buckingham Nicks II? When I heard Christine Mcvie wouldn't participate in this project, I knew I'd miss her. The old Fleetwood Mac lineup with Buckingham/Nicks/McVie as the three lead singers was Truly magical the way they played off each other. That said, it's probably good that Christine Mcvie isn't here. Her sunny, upbeat Love songs would seem way out of place here. What we have are what seems like two solo artists sharing an album together. Both Lindsey & Stevie contribute songs that are much like their solo work. Of course, when you have Mick Fleetwood & John McVie as your rhythm section, it's still going to sound like classic Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey's best tracks are 'Say Goodbye', Steal Your Heart Away' and 'Miranda'. He's less goofy and more darker on this record, although as 'Come' illustrates, he's still not over his "going insane" phase. Some of his tracks don't work in this context but I get the feeling if he would have used these for his fourth solo album (as was originally planned) it would have been a mind-blower. Stevie's best tracks are 'Destiny Rules', 'Everybody Finds Out', and the title track. Her stuff isn't that much different than her last solo album "Trouble In Shangri-La". This is an excellent album, although at times it seems like less of a group effort and more of a snapshot of two different (and very distinct) individuals.
