This outstanding 2-disc set captures all the Sun Studio recordings the King did, including outtakes (wisely gathered on the 2nd disc). Every take, though often unpolished and undeveloped, is gold. Presley's snythesis of Various styles from country to r&b to bluegrass was way ahead of its time and must be considered collectively as one of the keystones of rock n roll. The core trio of Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black clicked in a way that few have before or since and had they stayed together and evolved organically as did the Fab Four, who knows where Presley could have gone musically. Sure, he sung on plenty of gold records and the talent and charisma were always there, but the combination of him selling out/and being undermined (by the Colonel in particular) all but burried (if not outright detroyed) the spark heard on these rare disks. To hear the King with a fire in his Belly - before he slowly devolved into a 2nd rate Wayne Newton and ultimately destroyed himslef - first musically, and then physically - I highly recommend "Sunrise". Sunrise: an inspiration for musicians {and everyone} Elvis Presley`s Sun recordings are as vital and culturally significant as those of Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, and Hank Williams.
From the very start, Elvis` goal was to encompass every strand of the American musical tradition. There are many accusations of cultural theft surrounding these recordings. My opinion is that this is simply not true. I feel that it`s impossible not to recognize his achievement and the originality he brought to his cover songs. He was no more a copy of blues singer Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup than he was of bluegrass pioneer Bill Monroe.
This collection has inspired me to conduct repeated explorations of the original artists and their recordings that influenced Elvis.
Elvis has touched practically every major rock Artist in every way. Self-proclaimed disciples include innovators such as John Lennon, Jimmy Page, and Keith Richards. It was Lennon who said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Jimmy Page claims to have taken up the guitar in the first place because of the song, "Baby, Let`s Play House." From this collection, the entire rockabilly genre was born! Without these recordings, there might not have ever been The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, or countless others. This collection is the perfect fusion of blues, country, pop, and rock `n` roll. These recordings are a must for any Elvis fan who may or may not be familiar with his early work. I recommend this collection for any music fan or historian of rock `n` roll`s origins. To me, these songs are mythical in a sense. I first heard "That`s All Right" in 1991 and it gave me chills. I was so inspired, that I was compelled to learn the guitar so I could play that song! I`ve never grown tired of that song or any on this collection yet. Run out and get yours. You may never be the same after it reaches you. I wasn`t! RCA releases again and again... RCA continues to release and rerelease Elvis albums like the plague. Selling you with new bonus, never before heard alternate takes, etc. It's not different at all really, from the single cd "The Complete Sun Sessions" recording done 13 years ago. The sound quality is touched up a bit, and the extras are interesting But.. not worth the investment if you have the previous recordings. Although.. These sessions capture rock & roll at its most basic [12-bar blues] and romantic. Much has been said about Elvis' greatness, but this is the ONE album that proves it. Never before has an Artist been so exagerated as Elvis was in the 60's and 70's for mediocore at best material, but the songs on this album will have you falling head over heals in Love with Elvis, and wondering just how great things might have been if he would have stayed at Sun and never met up with the, err, the colonel. This is the greatest rock & roll ever recorded.. Period.. I've heard them all. This is the mecca that so many artists go back to.. The Beatles, Van Morrison, The Clash, Otis Redding, etc. It's got soul. Buy Elvis Presley Sunrise at Amazon.com Buy posters at Allposters.comJamster - the latest ringtones for your phone! |
