This is Ella at her best.

This collection of songs was originally recorded for the film "Let No Man Write My Epitaph," from 1960. It's an album that's just recently started to receive attention. This CD proves that Ella was more than capable of expressing great emotion in her singing. Many of the tracks, particularly "Angel Eyes" (which I can't stop listening to), are downright melancholy. She exudes so much maturity and elegance here, backed on the piano by Paul Smith, and her voice is at its absolute prime. Her versions of "My Melancholy Baby," "September Song," and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" are definitive. This is the absolute best!

Ella... Fitzgerald... perfection.

I have often heard people describe Ella as one dimensional, anyone who says that is not listening to the right records, or they do not understand the subtleties of phrasing, the art of singing. One listen to this would convert all the pessimests. I must say that on this particular recording of hers Ella is in extraordinary form. Maybe it is the simple one piano accompaniment that raises Ella to another level, maybe the knowledge her voice needs to become in essence another instrument. The depth of feeling Ella conveys and the way she phrases every word, this is singing at its emotionally pure best. I have said it before and I will say it again. Ella is the greatest female singer of the 1900's. I have not heard alot of the songs on this record and am Glad I have now because they are sublime. This is perfect Candlelight music. Listen to it late at night...

REALLY GREAT

For those who say that Ella's singing was pure technique and lacked feeling (especially when they compare her with Billie Holiday) here we have the proof of that statement being absolutely untrue! Ella sings only accompanied by a subtle piano, and you can even listen to her breathing. It's such a creation of her own what she did with this collection of songs, the phrasing, the tempo, her voice at its peak, the sentiment deeply attached to each song (YES; THE SENTIMENT! ). One wishes that she would have done more albums like this one. A SUPERIOR EXPERIENCE.
