A Different Recording from Ella...

This is a unique endevour from Ella. It swings gently, and she records some fairly rare tracks. I Love her version of "Close Your Eyes." It swings with a sensuality that is wonderful. The recordings of "I Never Had A Chance," belongs with an after bar time martini, before moving on to something else.

Oh my Gawd

Oh my Gawd, this is an album of astonishing beauty. Not one song is bad. I guess you would Call it a theme album. The theme is love, Sweet & poignant yet sad & pensive, but not at all bitter.
This is the one to play late at night with a lover or alone with with your favourite drink, be it alcoholic or a good old fashioned hot chocolate.
Note- There is no scat or fast numbers, just perfect ballads, that sound as if they were churned from the heavens above.

There's a lull in this album

This is a good album of ballads. As with all of Fitzgerald's Verve albums, the quality is great. Despite the presence of Stan Getz, however, the instrumentation on the album is not exceptional. It is not her best Verve album by a long shot, and the sister recording, 'Hello Love', is much better. However, if you're looking for something that's easy-listening and that swings, then I recommend it.
Altogether, the songs are rather sedate. 'There's A Lull In My Life' is well performed. The entire album is good songs well sung. There are better recordings of 'How Long Has This Been Going On?' Saying that, 'I Thought About You' is sublime.
The album is not Ella's most entertaining. There's no scat, though that doesn't matter. The album lacks a sparkle about it, and is generally rather dull. But it is supposed to be an easy-listening album of ballads, and that's what it is.
Something that is quite annoying about the production is the fact that on this CD reissue, the last four tracks are bonus numbers that in fact come from the sister album, 'Hello Love'. It is repetitive if one has both albums, and generally the four taken from the other album are lost on this CD. They fit in perfectly with the great selection of songs on 'Hello Love', but here I wonder what purpose they have? 'Hello Love' is available, so why this repeat?
Aside from that glitch, the album is intrinsically a Verve album by the First Lady of Song, and that can never be bad.
