| Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Swings Brightly with Nelson Band: Ella Fitzgerald Tracks: - When Your Lover Has Gone - Don't Be That Way - Love Me or Leave Me - I Hear Music - What Am I Here For? - I'm Gonna Go Fishin' - I Won't Dance - I Only Have Eyes for You - Gentleman Is a Dope - Mean to Me - Alone Together - Pick Yourself Up - Call Me Darling [Take Three] - Somebody Loves Me - Cheerful Little Earful the greatest singer, the greatest arranger, great sound... When I fist bought this cd back in 1993 I already had many of Ella's Verve releases, including all the songbooks. But the very inspired arrangements of Nelson Riddle and the great ballance that Ella found when she recorded these standards, made this very one my all time favorite. She sings whith a perfect balance between the original melody of songs and a little improvise... it keeps you fascinated all the time. On the other hand Nelson seemed to recycle some of his best ideas of his previous arrangements ( notably his Sinatra's parts) what makes the listening even more pleasant. Read other reviews and do not consider that one made by a certain 11 y.o. kid. If you like swing records, you will Love it... Paulo Brazil ( Ps.: forgive me for my awfull english writing). Dull...Not Ella's Best! When I first bought this CD back in November, I showed it to my dad. He said he thought that it didn't look very good. He was right. Of the 15 tracks on this album, the only two good ones are "When Your Lover Has Gone" and "Love me or Leave Me." The rest of the numbers are flat, and are not very up-tempoed. Also, the CD has very poor packaging, and looks like they were in a hurry to sell them in record stores. So, Ella fans all over the world-that's you!!!-beware of this CD! Swings, baby! From beginning to end, this CD is a swinging masterpiece. The Band is terrific; you'll be snapping your fingers, sayin' "yeah, boy!" before you know it. The tracks are a great mixture of standards that everybody knows along with some others that are not as frequently recorded. My particular favorites are "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" by Duke Ellington and "The Gentleman is a Dope". Ella's got just the right 'tude. And her voice sounds mostly wonderful, too. The recording quality is excellent especially when compared to some other recordings from this era (1962). I would *highly* recommend this cd for anyone trying to select their first Ella CD. It's SO much fun, and not at all "difficult" the way some of her more straight-ahead work might seem.
