Dio throws a clunker

I was eagerly awaiting this release in The Fall of 1996, as his previous release "Strange Highways" was his best since the mid-'80s. Well, sorry to say I was mighty disappointed with "Angry Machines." I kept expecting the songs, and more importantly, the melodies to grow stronger as the album wore on... but it never happened! The riffs are fairly aimless, wandering around without any real Focus or purpose. The bass line plods along with a '90s wall-of-sound rumble via Dokken bassist Jeff Pilson, but he lacks the innovative bends of Geezer Butler. All of the songs sound pretty similar to one another, slow and dreary with not a hook to be found. Finally towards the end of the album, there is one track "Dying in America" which can compete with the "Holy Diver"-era. But then to reinforce the lameness of the overall experience, there is a cruddy ballad that reminds me of a lulluby to close things. Maybe Ronnie should pack his bags and head for the Vegas nostalgia curcuit like David Lee Roth, I don't think he will ever impress along the lines of "Heaven and Hell" or "Rising" again.

dark metal at its best

In 1996, there were some things missing in the music scene. No one was doing original, straight forward, non-tampered-with albums. So what does Dio do? Make the most raw album in the Dio catalog. Angry Machines is heavy, dark, original and hrd rock that is in your face. Black and Big Sister stand out as the hard rockers. Along with Don't tell the Kids. The string arrangement on Stay out of my Mind is a nice suprise. And This is your Life is the perfect, relaxing closer for the album. So if you are looking for a straight forward hard rock album with the feel of Sabbath. Angry Machines is a good buy.

Complete Letdown

I loved Dehumanizer and after Ozzy rejoined I fell out of Love with Black Sabbath. I took a chance on Dio's Strange Highways after reading an Amazon review that compared it to Dehumaizer. While not as amazing as that album, Strange Highways was a solid, heavy album. I read an Amazon review of Angry Machines that called even heavier and darker. I took a chance and I was totally let down. This album is a waste. No interesting riffs ( I can't believe this is the same guitarist that played on Strange Highways!) and empty lyrics. Save your money or pick up Dehumanizer if you haven't already.
