| Depeche Mode - Exciter Band: Depeche Mode Tracks: - Dream On - Shine - The Sweetest Condition - When The Body Speaks - The Dead of Night - Lovetheme - Freelove - Comatose - I Feel Loved - Breathe - Easy Tiger - I Am You - Goodnight Lovers The sound of 2 a.m. Let's face it, Depeche Mode has always been an incredible singles band. The albums, on the other hand, were usually mixed bags, each containg a few gems, some decent songs and one or two... dogs. In case of Exciter, the weak links (literally) are the instrumental interludes, which are a waste of space. I don't know why they feel the need to "pad" their albums. Still, "Dream On", "Shine", "I Feel Loved" and "Goodnight Lovers" are DM at their best. The absolute highlight for me is "Freelove"-a breathtakingly beautiful and dark "lust song". The entire album is marked by great production, play it loud so you can hear all the neat sound textures. Also, despite occasional weak moments, the album is sequenced well and works as a whole. Puts me in a reflective (and dark) frame of mind. This is the sound of 2 a.m.-when you can't sleep. P.S. Let's all take a deep collective breath and get over the departure of one Alan Wilder. There. Doesn't it feel better? What went wrong? After two post-Alan Wilder albums, it's clear that Depeche Mode has suffered at the loss of its sonic architect. Wilder, who left Depeche Mode following "Songs of Faith and Devotion" to Focus on his successful solo effort, Recoil, had been the man responsible for Depeche Mode's sonic tapestry. True, Martin Gore wrote the music, but it was Alan who took that music and turned it into Depeche Mode's signature sound. "Violator" is perhaps one of his greatest efforts, closely followed by "Songs of Faith and Devotion." Alan left, rightly so, for not getting the credit he deserved in Depeche Mode, and oh how that's evident now with the miserable "Exciter." This is coming from a long-time DM fan, stretching back to the mid 1980s, so it was very disappointing to me to give "Exciter" such a low rating. The problem with "Exciter," for me, is a lack of a coherent thread, a vital center, a musical tapestry that takes the listener from one song to the next. "Ultra," DM's first album with Wilder, is at least a better example of an album that flows well, musically as well as emotionally. "Exciter," on the other hand, seems to be a collection of material that wasn't quite fleshed out oduct>B00000DC e only bad part is Dave is bursting with inspiring words, but ends up repeating "So much to say" too much. Then there is "Two Step" with an amazing into... and the awesome metaphor of "Hey, my love, you came to me like wine comes to this mouth, grown tired of water all the time, you quench my Heart and you quench my mind, a couple of months ago, I got it from a local store. It was an import (as Kate has never had any CD released in Brazil) an y. " Buy Depeche Mode Exciter at Amazon.com Buy posters at Allposters.comJamster - the latest ringtones for your phone! |
