| Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer Band: Black Sabbath Tracks: - Computer God - After All (The Dead) - TV Crimes - Letters From Earth - Master of Insanity - Time Machine - Sins of the Father - Too Late - I - Buried Alive - Time Machine [Wayne's World Version] The best of the Dio-Sabbath albums After 1990's lackluster Tyr from Sabbath, and Dio's completely unsalvageable Lock Up the Wolves from the same year, Ronnie reunited with his former Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice to record what became Dehumanizer, an effort that sounded like it was recorded six months after 1981's Mob Rules. Track after track, Dehumanizer pumps out metal with a modern sound, while sticking firmly to old school roots. Without Dio monopolizing the lyric writing duties, the lyrical content is more diverse than on _Heaven and Hell_ and _Mob Rules_, featuring anti-technology bile that hints at Geezer ("Computer God"), as well as stuff you'd expect from Dio. (All author's speculation--as always with Sabbath, they don't tell us who wrote what.) Dehumanizer is recommendable to anyone who likes Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio, old school speed metal...Any quality metal, really. This album is one My Favorite Black Sabbath records (out of eighteen), and frankly it's a shame to see it reduced to Cut Out bin price here at Amazon (as of this writing). Buy it! :) Best Sabbath output since '83 Butler and Dio rejoin Iommi to attempt to pump some new life in the old and fading machine known as Sabbath. Heck, almost anything would have to be better than "Headless Cross" and clunker "TYR." But of course Geezer and Ronnie are going to put in top-flight effort as always, not just hoping to Cash in at the registers. (And surprising in the UK, this album only charted in at #28, lower than TYR's #24). And better this album is... considerably darker and more bass churningly Doom metal than anything since the brillant "Born Again" experience. The lyrics simply crush the lightweight fluff that has marred the Martin recordings. Iommi remembers what used to make Sabbath excel, slow but forceful riffs with brillant mid-song lead breaks. Even Appice is more creative behind the drum kit than Powell (R.I.P. Cozy... no offense meant). In my mind, the best songs here are the cruisers: TV Crimes, Time Machine, I. But songs like Letters from Earth and Sins of the Father simply lay to waste the uninspired, dinosaur rock of Cross Purposes in '94. It is clearly evident that Ronnie had breifly inspired this band, really Iommi, past the rusted goth clunkers that have been plagueing for somewheres around 6 years. This is worthy of the Sabbath name, if not exactly on par with Heaven and Hell or Born Again. Remember Kids, Non-Ozzy Sabbath DOES Kick First, let me tell you that I've loved almost every Sabbath album out there (I didn't care for "Technical Ecstasy" or "The Eternal Idol" much, but I wouldn't say I hated them...). But my faves have always included the Dio-era albums. Ronnie can just belt out the vocals better, and I've always been a huge fan of Dio's lyrics. I'm not saying I'm not a fan of Ozzy's work (My opinion was that with Sabbath & Ozzy not together, we had TWO killer bands instead of one, and who could argue with that?) as I have most of Oz's albums. But Dehumanizer is arguably one of the best Sab discs in their whole catalog. "I" is a classic metal anthem, complete with sing-along lyrics (and tons of devil horns \m/). Both versions of "Time Machine" need to be played at high volume, preferably in a fast-moving vehicle... "Sins of The Father" and "Computer God" sound like Dio stole our 70's Sabbath. Slow, doomy, and killer. "TV Crimes" is a great track, tho most bands did the whole Televangelist thing back in the late 80's & early 90's, so for me, lyrically, it sounded a tad cliche (though it kicks tons...). My only complaint about this album is that the Dio reunion lasted only one album... Think of what Sabbath could have been in the mid 90's with Dio at the helm...
