Ball - Whistle Down the Wind

Songs from the musical by A. Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman

This is an album of pop and rock singers singing songs from the musical Whistle Down the Wind by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman. Most singers are good. Tom Jones has one of the greatest voices of the century. Ronan Keating of Boyzone and Michael Ball are two other men with Strong and soulful voices. Boyzone's "No Matter What" is probably the most perfect pure pop song of 90's. The only Artist on the album who I'd never heard of before is Sounds of Blackness. Their "Wrestle with the Devil is a magical afro-gospel-dance song. Bonnie Tyler's "Tire Tracks" has a disco arrangement with a very nice sax. Boy George does "Try Not to Be Afraid" beautifully. "A Kiss Is a Terrible Thing to Waste" by Meat Loaf is a great piece of work. Even though all the music is credited to Andrew Lloyd Webber, most of this song was written by Jim Steinman. The sometimes sweet, sometimes disharmonic orchestral arrangement is amazing. Brian May of Queen was going to play on this song but the solo guitar in the released version is played by Clem Clemson of Humble Pie and Colosseum. Unfortunately there are a few less good tracks: Donny Osmond obviously tries to make "When Children Rule World" sound really cute. However, it sounds simply bad. There is a much better single release of this song performed by Red Hill Children. "Cold" by Everly Brothers is ok but not great, Walter Herron Reynolds did an excellent version of it on the cast album. Tina Arena's version of the title track has a too basic arrangement which makes it just another piece of boring modern pop music. Lottie Mayor's version of the same song is almost perfect.
So this makes it a four star album. Want to make it a Five star album? Remove Tina Arena's Whistle Down the Wind. Replace Everly Brothers' Cold with Walter Herron Reynolds's version and Donny Osmond's When Children Rule the World with the Red Hill Children version. And add Meat Loaf's epic version of "Home By Now - No Matter What" as a bonus track.
