| Babes in Toyland - Nemesisters Band: Babes in Toyland Tracks: - Hello - Oh Yeah! - Drivin' - Sweet '69 - Surd - 22 - Ariel - Killer on the Road - Middle Man - Memory - S.F.W. - All by Myself - Deep Song - We Are Family Good, Just Not Great. "Nemesisters" was a good album to end Babes In Toyland's studio career. Upon listening to it, one can notice that in some parts, the songs feel lifeless, like they were playing it just to get it over with, filler. But others are so powerful and the band's chemistry is very present. On songs like "Hello", "Ariel", "22", and "Sweet '69" The Band seems so together and are playing with feeling. On some of the other songs such as "S. F. W. " and "Killer on the Road" the songs sort of Fall apart and crack at the seems. The most apparent disaster is "All By Myself". It is an interesting blend of rage, infantile whining, sadness, and humor. It is good right up until the end when The Band plays faster than Kat is singing and she starts slurring some lyrics dreadfully (i.e.: "Don't want to be all b-b-by myself"). My last complaint is the cover art. The Artist only managed to make Kat look great as a good/bad mermaid with straggly White hair and an almost wild look in her eyes. Lori is depicted as a snake with Medusa hair and Maureen is made of different foods. *Cough* Kinda lame. I must say though, the side show/carnival theme goes well with the music. One last note. This album, I'm happy to say, FINALLY projects the music, so that it is not necessary to crank the volume up all the way just to hear it. If your a fan of Babes in Toyland, pick this album up, the Strong songs are worth it. If you've never heard from the Babes, perhaps start with "Fontanelle" or "Painkillers", if you like those, give this a try. An uneven collection The best songs on NEMESISTERS are the ones that stick to Babes in Toyland's signature sound of a near-Metal guitar with Kat's near-banshee shrieks, such as "Sweet '69" and "S.F.W." Where NEMESISTERS fails is when it tries to remake classic hits of the past, such as "All By Myself" and "We Are Family." I understand the concept the Babes were going for, but they just couldn't pull it off. "All By Myself" is particularly painful to the ears because, well, Kat B'jelland - one of the greatest screamers in rock history - does not have what one would consider a conventionally beautiful voice. Her voice is suited perfectly for the kind of music that made the Babes famous, but not so much for soft-rock standards or disco anthems. Still, a fan of the Babes will probably want to get NEMESISTERS because the songs that stick to Babes' tradition are very good. the babes pull another surprise out of the hat this album is the babes heavy metal album, it rocks! oh yeah is amazing, Sweet '69 is a complex joke, SFW is angry punk and we are family is a crowning glory.the album is different to the rest of their material, but isn't that a good thing that a Band can Change their sound a bit and still rock. i mean, Hole released c.skin which didn't rock, so its not true to every band, but the babes keep it fresh by changing their sound. the album is the best, and everyone should buy it now!
