Great for fans of ANGRY Gril Rock!

"Fontanelle" rules! I like "Bruise Violet" and "Bluebell" A LOT! This is even better than most, if not all, L7 or Bikini Kill CDs. Honestly. In my opinion, this is the best Babes in Toyland CD.

The Babes's signature work

This is the best CD Babes in Toyland has ever made, and it came out at their peak: the early 90s. The most memorable song on this CD, of course, is "Bruised Violet," which is a - shreaking - commentary on lead singer Kat B'jelland's love/hate friendship with Courtney Love, lead singer of The Band Hole. "Bruised Violet" is built on the accusation, by now legendary to the point of passe, that Courtney stole Kat's "babydoll" concept: "You were born with glue instead of spine," Kat screams. The other stand-out is "Handsome and Gretel." I'm not really sure what the song is "about," but it showcases Babes In Toyland's style perfectly, a mix of screaming Kat's "riot grrrl" posturing, with an almost heavy metal musical backing.
This CD is best suited for the "initiated." In other words, if you are interested in the "riot grrrl" scene that sprung up about a decade ago, this CD is landmark and is a must. If you are indifferent to that era then you will probably be indifferent to this CD. Fans of the Babes (Kat B'jelland has been clear to point out that they are "babes" in terms of "babies," not "babes" in terms of "hot women") will probably also be interested in the book BABES IN TOYLAND: THE MAKING AND SELLING OF A ROCK AND ROLL Band by Neal Karlen.

fontanelle

This is easily Babes in Toyland's best record. It's missing a couple of essential songs ("Catatonic" and "Lashes"), but as a whole it shines. The emotion is raw, both abused and abusive, and, unlike many bands that get lumped into "riot grrrl", the most scathing taunts that Babes in Toyland has to offer are directed toward other women. Fontanelle is a fountain of Self hate, misdirected anger, and it is perfect. It'll make you angry and sad, and you won't regret a minute of it.
