Andrew Lloyd Webber's Best! Of all the musicals I have experienced, none have Possessed the theatrical magic and gorgeous music as does 'The Phantom Of The Opera.' The msuical is Truly a masterpiece. Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are all that one could ask for in the parts of the Phantom and Christine. Ms. Brightman's voice is especially beautiful, due to it's innocence and purity. Overall, it's the best cast anyone could want. The only complaint I have with this as opposed to the Canadian cast recording is that they seem to have cut the gasps which Christine displays at intricate parts of the show, which are included in the Canadian version. This casting alone though is reason enough to choose it over the far less-superior Canadian cast. The story and the intrigue of the music are what drives this play's success, but it's this cast that makes it timeless. The Best Sounds Even Better My introduction to the phenomenal world of Andew Lloyd Webber began in high school. While watching the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon in 1988 (my fresman year), I happened upon one of the most haunting, beautiful, dramatic voices I have ever heard. Michael Crawford had been around but for the first time, I was totally transfixed to my television. The next day, a classmate brought the performance of "Music of the Night" to choir. It was not for another two years that my high school choir traveled to Chicago to see "Phantom" and it forever changed my life. I had known for years that I wanted to be a performer, but after seeing this spectacular show, I also wanted to become a stage performer. The show contains so many songs that are now world-reknown that it is hard to think of them all: Angel of Music, Music of the Night, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, All I Ask of You, Point of No Return, and not forgetting the title song. My sister has the original Double CD soundtrack; however, it is full of scratches. I am so pleased that ALW remastered the masterpiece, and placed it in a slim package with a nice jacket (it is so bothersome storing the old Double CD packages. Better Than Ever! If you haven't already purchased the OLC to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, I highly suggest purchasing this one! Though the debate among Phans rages about whether this recording is worth the money, I certainly believe it is. I personally ordered it from amazon.co.uk (for a bit cheaper price), seeing as it hasn't been released in the US, to my knowledge. The quality on this CD is incomparable. Songs such as Prima Donna and both versions of Notes, where there is much singing at once, are far clearer on this CD than on the original. In addition, the voices of Brightman, Barton, Crawford, and company are almost life-like on a good stereo system. The vibrato and emotion normally reserved for Live audiences Truly comes through on this recording. There is also the added bonus of a nicer libretto than the one included in the 1986 version and a separate book with new pictures. The CDs themselves have the trademark masks on them and are both in a single case, for easier transport. All in all, if you have the 1986 version, make the uprgade. If you don't, buy this one first and only the 1986 if you're a pure Phan. Nothing beats a digitally remastered Erik breathing, "Oh, *Christine*..."
