Adolphe Adam - The Three Tenors Christmas

Band:

Adolphe Adam

Not a "Three Tenors" fan _but_

This is _not_ the usual type of Christmas music you will hear over the radio as the holiday approaches. Speaking strictly for me, if I never heard "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" again in my life, it would be too soon. So I thought I'd try out "The Three Tenors" and see what their Christmas album had to offer.
There are some problems with the music - Pavorotti seems to have some difficulty with English, but on the whole I did enjoy this album - and I'm not a fan of "The Three Tenors". I would have picked some other music for them to do - the John Lennon composition "Happy Christmas / War is Over" doesn't seem to work wel in this particular format, but it's entirely possible that I am too used to the Lennon/Ono performance.
So try something new for the Christmas season and listen to this cd. It has some very good cuts, especially "Felice Navidad".

The Three Tenors WITH THREE GOLDEN VOICES

Each time these guys get together for a recording session, all things turn to gold in their particular style of music. I have all The Three Tenors CDs and I am not surprise on how good this venture turned out. I am not a great lover of opera, but these guys I do like. For the opera lover, you may be able to pick apart the flaws and be crtical about their performance, but not I. I just Love it. This CD will not be played only at Christmas, but it will be apart of my everyday listing Pleasure along with other Three Tenors CDs. I am hoping that there will be another Three Tenors performance in 2002 after the World Soccer Championships.; we can only hope.
Happy listing, because you will enjoy it

Long awaited Christmas flop

When I first got this CD two years ago, I listened to it as I drove everywhere during the holiday season. A Three Tenors Christmas CD had been long awaited and I, an avid fan, could not be without it. However, as I have gotten it out in following years, it has been harder and harder for me to enjoy.
Every piece on the CD, whether in French, English, German-- whatever, has many diction problems. Besides that, the ensemble is a disaster; the orchestra and singers are often separated (as is the orchestra from itself and the singers from themselves). It is undeniable that the tenors are past their primes; they cover all their vowels as soon as they get in their passaggi. Further, the music is all manipulated to end on high A's, Bb's, and even a few B's. After a while, this kind of exclamation mark ending is wearing on the ears and nerves. For those of you with perfect pitch, note that the orchestra and singers are constantly WAY out of tune.
I would not recommend this CD to anyone for the aesthetic value, but only for Three Tenor fans who cannot Live without it. For holiday listening, turn more toward the classics we've heard since childhood, like those found on NOW Christmas.
