An excellent collection

This is a fine 21-song compilation of Adam Ant's highlight work during the heyday of his career, the early 80's. The CD transitions nicely throughout each phase, beginning with selected tracks from Dirk Wears White Sox up to Vive Le Rock. Early songs such as the energetic "Zerox" and the naughty "Whip In My Valise" sample the pre-warpaint era. On "Kick", you hear the transformation from the New Wave sound into the trademark drumbeats of the Kings of the Wild Frontier tracks. The rhythmic, thumping motifs begin to fade as you go through the Prince Charming and horn-laced Friend Or Foe tracks. Phil Collins' drumwork lends two helping hands on "Strip" and "Puss and Boots" (whose percussion at times resembles that on Frida's "I Know There's Somehting Going On"). Anyone with any appreciation of Adam Ant's work should give this collection a try. If you had to own only one Adam Ant CD, this is the keeper. "Stand Or Deliver" is probably My Favorite track.

Antmusic

ADAM ANT created some incredibly catchy art-pop between 1979 and 1983. After that... well... it's all a bit dodgy, but the material he cranked out in those 5 years is rather incredible. A blend of post-punk, tribal rhythms, Tower Of Power style horns, and wistful S & M fetish.
"Antics in the Forbidden Zone" is essentially a greatest hits disc. They pretty much got it right with this one. There's a couple more songs off of KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER that I might have included, had I been the compiler of this collection, and I would have left off the last 2 songs from the VIVE LE ROCK album... but I guess on these career overview CD's you're required to buttkiss the artists and tell them they made decent music on all their records... But, anyway, what you have here is 19 excellent songs out of 21. Not a bad ratio.
Favorite songs on the disc are "Whip in My Valise", "Antmusic", "Stand and Deliver", "Beat My Guest", "Desperate but Not Serious", "Friend or Foe", and the world-wide smash-hit "Goody Two Shoes".
If you dig 80's post punk goodies like GARY NUMAN, or JOY DIVISION, or PIL, or Bow Wow Wow you need to check out this disc. Of course, if you're into that stuff I probably don't need to tell you anything about the genius of ADAM ANT... you already know don't you?!
Pick up this disc... it'll make you want to put on a pirate outfit and smear White greasepaint across your nose.

HUZZAH!!!

This, along with B-side Babies, is really the only Ant you need. I think everyone needs a bit of spunkypunky, kitschy, relatively mentally ill camp pop in their collection. "Beat My Guest" is probably My Favorite on the disk; it's really catchy and funny and messed up...I warn you, though, once you hear it, it will never leave your head no matter how hard you try. "Stand And Deliver" is brilliant. Actually, they're all great...the only songs on it that are kinda on the cheesy side are the ones from "Strip". Phil Collins produced them (shudder). But hey, it's cool, the other 19 tracks are excellent and you do need fun, weird, tongue-in-cheek music in your collection along with the Joy Division and the Nirvana, it's good for you. Trust me on this. Have I ever steered you wrong before? Didn't think so.
