| Abba - Abba - The Album Band: Abba Truly "The Album" I used to listen to the cassette of this a LOT when I was a kid, and it was one of the first ABBA albums I bought on CD. "Eagle," as others have attested, is great with its trancelike rhythm in E minor, cool lead guitar playing, and Native American-sounding two-note woodwind. Frida and Agnetha's vocals during the verses are subdued but soar during the chorus. You're probably already familiar with "Take A Chance" and Name Of The Game" but there are many noteworthy songs here. The fast rocker "Hole In Your Soul" has the women shouting the verses, saves the subdued vocals for the chorus, and throws in quiet, angelic harmonies in the bridge--a daring arrangement--and then Agnetha hits you with one hell of screaming high-note before the first verse repeats prior to the repeated choruses for the fade-out. There's another great guitar solo in--of all songs--"I'm A Marionette." The whole album is just written and performed really well. By far their finest moment! If you want ABBA's finest pre-1979 album, then this is THE ONE! Masters of their craft, ABBA experimented a little with some rather folksy melodies on "Eagle," "Move On," and they even experimented with three rather theatrical "showcase" tracks, dubbed "A Mini-Musical." These tracks are "Thank You For the Music," "I Wonder (Departure)," and "I'm A Marionette." Also, on this CD, you'll find the irresistible "Take A Chance On Me," "The Name of hte Game," and "Hole In Your Soul." Without sticking to pop "formula," ABBA has crafted what stands as their finest album. Some fans may consider this one second only to "Super Trouper," but I personally feel this stands as their best piece of work to date. Highlights: "Eagle," "Take A Chance On Me," "The Name of the Game," "Thank You For the Music," and "I'm A Marionette." Goes With ABBA: The Movie ABBA started to show both lyrical and musical maturity with this release. The first track, "Eagle" was their first to clock in at over 5 minutes in length and was void of the "sing song" lyrics found in prior efforts. "One Man, One Woman", "The Name of the Game" (an absolute classic!), and "Move On" all demonstrated a more personal side to ABBA's lyrics. "Take A Chance On Me" and "Move On" continued to show ABBA still knew how to have a good time. The last three tracks were all from a mini-musical called "The Girl With The Golden Hair". Of the three, "Thank You For The Music" is the standout track. The release of this album coincided with the release of ABBA: The Movie and a few of the tracks here are included in the movie. Overall this was quite an advancement both lyrically and musically from prior efforts.
